In past seasons the girls soccer team has not fared well in games, for several years they have had losing seasons. However new talent has helped to change the way they play. They have already won more games than last season and have already doubled the amount of goals that they have scored. Many parents and boys players credit their victories to the new players that have joined the team.
The girls soccer team got a slew of new talent. Mostly freshmen who chose to stay at Bigfork and not go to Flathead or Glacier. Also the girls added Katie Thomas, a junior who transferred from Glacier, and a sophomore, Georgia Cleasby, from Tennessee.
Thomas stated “The girls brought a spark to the team, and we had a great shot at playoffs. There is always next season.”
Thomas has three goals to her name, two of which were from penalties.
Despite having many new players it is the returning core players who hold things together and captain the team. Some of the returners are Megan Pancoast and Grace Rehbein, who joined her sophomore year but is already a powerhouse on the team.
They have been with the team since the beginning and are happy to see the girls at the top of their form.
To make playoffs the girls needed to maximize points in their next games. Kyle Thomson said, “The girls needed to work harder in training and they should have been able to make it, they have a good team and have lots of potential.”
The girl’s team is one of the better teams that Bigfork has had in several years. The girls haven’t had a winning season since Quinci Paine, and Caitlin Charlebios played, which was in 2011.
Snow day, the cold facts
By McKinley Paine What really qualifies as a snow day? Throughout the school year many students wonder why we have snow days. There are many theories but the truth was reached. Many people the schools close due to snow itself however that is only sometimes the case.
When asked Mr. Jensen stated “Schools don't get the call from the state anymore, its the schools themselves that declare if its going to be a snow day or not, thats because when the state declares emergency travel only it is only a burden on the community.” also he talked about how if a main school closes the feeder schools like Swan River has to close, but not the other way around.
The actual reasons behind a snow day were explained “Its not snow but ice and the cold that will cause school to be closed, we can't have students sitting outside for the bus in freezing temperatures. we also have people go out each morning and drive the roads and make sure they are passable.” Last year Bigfork has a snow day due to frigid temperatures.
At the end of Christmas break we had two additional days added to it due to heavy snow, this is one of the cases where snow, not ice or cold caused the schools to close. Jensen said “This was a special case, because some of the plows had broken down so there was no chance they could get the roads cleared in time.”
The downside to snow days is they usually have to be made up. However at bigfork there's days built in to counter such an event. you can usually have a one or two days without having to make it up. this is the case, bigfork still has enough days that we do not have to go to more school.
Snow days are a wonderful surprise to wake up to, but the school has closed for a reason and everyone should be careful when going outside. Its a very cold time of the year and many people don't prepare for the weather. So whenever there is a snow day or anyday in winter dress warm and be safe on the roads.
Time for a change
The first day back to BHS from a great summer brought many students complaining about the dress code and how it is too harsh.
Of the 22 students polled only three said that the dress code was appropriate. The others stated that it was unfair and much too harsh.
As young adults we need to learn about dressing ourselves in a manner that is appropriate yet comfortable.
The code is very strict and has a much larger effect on the girls of the school and not nearly as much the boys. However the girls have many more ways to break it,
Mr. Appleby quoted that “the dress code is there to protect students” and that “If a girl has a revealing shirt on that some boys could get the wrong idea.” The point is a good one however people need to learn themselves and from their mistakes.
Guys are not the only reason this happens. Girls wear the revealing shirt and they probably know full well that it will get a guys attention, in the wrong way. As Jonathan stated, “the code is there so girls don’t dress like improper women.
Some parts of the code are needed, for example not allowing gang references is a plus. On the other hand having skirts that go below the knee is outrageous.
If you look at sports teams and how the dress code does not seem to have any effect on them. Volleyball shorts are very revealing and there are no problems with guys getting out of hand games, and or as a soccer player says in soccer with soccer shorts girls don’t come swooning onto the field at the sight of our lovely knees. The students are speaking out and someone needs to listen, the code needs a change.
Heroes.
What heroes walk amongst us?
By McKinley Paine
What is a hero? They are people who do good things for people. Some are well known like Aquaman or Superman, but there are heroes that do not have superpowers. They walk amongst us; they are hidden amongst us and yet are our heroes.
When asked teachers and students alike both named two people. Sue Loffler, and Makena Morley. When asked about Loffler. Both Scarlet Sherman and Phillis valentino both said. “ She is an amazing woman who has battled cancer and still comes to school every day with a smile on her face, if she isn't a hero I don't know who is.”
Even students had similar things to say.
Mattie Mcanally said, “ she is an amazing person who loves the school and we love her.”
When asked to name a student hero the name was obvious. Makena Morley.
Ben Russell said, “She is an amazing girl who is always happy and helping others...it also helps that she is a four time state champion.”
Heroes in the school are not always the popular people, but people who are always there for others. They usually are people who work without reward and have no intent on receiving one. Both Loffler and Morley exhibit those traits, and are true to them everyday.

repeat, Can they do it again?
Cutline. The Bigfork Boys team last year went undefeated last season, and won a state title, they are trying for a repeat.
caption. The trophy from last years victory, stands reminder that the task can be done of winning a state title.
The boys basketball team has recently won a state championship, however the repeat is in question. many say that is cannot be done Lana Berg said that “the talent isn't there, they don't have the height that they had last year, if they want an chance they need to watch out for teams with height.” Others believe that they can. Tyler P said “Yes we can we have heart, miles and miles of heart. also the girls have a good shot and winning state too they beat fairfield and troy and those were big steps in getting closer to the win.” many say that without the senior standout Chris Evans from last year he was key in winning the title. The team is confident that they can pull off the dead again, they have speed and lots of it with players like Jonathan Landon and Adam Jordt. The team has many talented individuals and they have confidence that state is in their grasp even though that many doubt their talents. The boys are lacking in height but they have players that can handle the taller players. “Lloyd is one of the tallest on the team and he proves that he is a force on the team” Cody Warnock said. The boys in general have the skill to win and they are determined to take another state title, they have many talented players like Future UM football player Josh Sandry and teammates Adam Jordt and Ryder trent. The boys have grown up together and have been on the team for years. They have had troubles with shooting in earlier games outside the arc, but the tea has worked on the problem and the percentage has risen. The team isn't lacking in depth either, they have many talented younger players like Levi Spanogle and Lloyd. The team is fast paced and they will run anyone else out of the gym. The team has a great chance to grab another state title this year and they will try their hardest to make that goal a reality.
