There is a lot of learning new things which is fun but also a little overwhelming at times…. Thus far it has been a great fit, we have great kids here,” explained Mr. Hollow. No Shave November By RYDER NOLLAN It is November, and just like every year, it is common to see people a little bit more hairy then usual, with beards, mustaches and just general hair. No Shave November and movember. No shave November and Movember are very similar but have key diffrences. Movember participants can only grow mustaches that does not connect to sideburns. No Shave November means participants do not shave at all. No Shave November participants do not shave their hair off in order to bring awareness to cancer, because many cancer patients lose. Participants then donate all of the money they typically would have spent on shaving and grooming to a cancer charity. What people really try to bring awareness to and raise money for is prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancers in the United States with an estimated 233,000 new cases in 2014, according to the National Cancer Institute. That means it accounts for 14 percent of all new cancer cases. An estimated 29,000 people will die from prostate cancer this year, according to the NIH, which is five percent of all cancer deaths. There are many participants in No shave November but why do they do it? “ The creation of No Shave November originated in Australia, 2004. A group of 30 men organized an event and grew moustaches for 30 days to raise awareness for prostate cancer and depression in men. The purpose of that was to get people's attention and start a conversation of what they were doing, which lead it to talking about men's health and how they can help. To participate in Movember, start with a fresh face at the beginning of the month, and do not shave until November 30, and raise funds for the cause. The Movember Project has donated money to more than 800 programs to date. To participate in No-Shave November, give up a typical grooming practices and donate what would normally be spent on it toward cancer research.
Wikipedia making green By:RYDER NOLLAN Lately, students may have seen a little square box pop on Wikipedia asking for donations and saying we ask you humbly to help. This sparks people into wondering why they need donation money. The thing is that wikipedia is a non profit website, so it only makes its money through donations. When consumers read their message, it seems like they are guilt tripping readers into helping them. They claim that if they do not get enough money it will shut down. This is, in fact a trick and they raise much more money each year from to keep corporations Wikipedia operating. Google last year donated $2 million to Wikimedia Endowment, and additional $1.1 million donation went to the Wikimedia Foundation, according to TechCrunch. Wikipedia had to raise $25 million to keep the site going for one year; in the fiscal year that ended last June, net assets in excess of $77 million — about one and a half times the amount it actually takes to fund the site for a year, according to the Washington Post. Wikipedia was founded on January 15, 2001, Jimmy Wales and larry singer. It was based off another website called Nupedia; the whole idea was to have an encyclopedia, but have it like article with non-biased articles just the facts. Wikipedia has its downfalls to it such as Vandalism. Being a free edit site is tough, because anybody with an account can go in and change things to make them incorrect. This is why teachers say that Wikipedia is not a reliable source. Another issue with free edit sites is paid editing. This is when an editor is paid by a company to make their page on Wikipedia look better or put it in the light, since so many people go on wikipedia. Wikipedia is a good website for just looking up quick facts, but not for school work, and will continue to grow throughout the years.
Run Bea Run By: RYDER NOLLAN Beau Wielkoszewski, is head coach for Bigfork High cross county, a self-funded sport. This means his team does not receive monetary assistance from the school, so the team has to pay for buses, gas, bus driver hourly pay, and entry fees. Essentially, if it is for the team, the team has to pay. In order to fund his sport Wielkoszewski came up with a plan. He decided to do a ten day run, having friends, family and local supporters to sponsor his progress. During this race, which took place in Phoenix, Arizona, after winter break attempted to run the distance across the state of Montana, approximately 559 miles. Beau is hoping that this race will bring awareness for the sport. BHS Cross Country runners must raise about $9,000 a year in order to keep their team. What they are doing is hoping people will donate on their page and give a certain amount of money per month, like if they raise 750 dollars a month that will equal to 9,000 dollars and it will pay for an entire season. If they raise 4,167 dollars a month it will pay for an entire season for all of BHS unfunded sports after one year of fundraising. Beau has been training around the clock for this race. “I have done a lot of miles. For instance, one day I ran 35 miles on the treadmill, and I spend 12 to 14 hours a week running” said Beau. Beau is not simply running to get ready; he also runs at the Athletic club to prepare for the hot Arizona weather. Beau is also not just training he running muscles, “A lot of this race is partially walking because I can't run for ten days straight and what's interesting about walking muscles are different from you running muscles,” explained Beau. No doubt about it, Beau is running a lot of miles and is prepared for this race. BHS students can help by donating money for BHS unfunded sports.
The Power of the Student Section By:RYDER NOLLAN The student section can be a great motivator for Bigfork players during games and can distract the opposing teams during critical free throws. But how much does it really affects is still to be determined. There was a study done like from ESPN. which said that there was no way to really see if the student section affected the game. The reason why is because the student sections are loud and crazy, and can try to distract the other team, but players still have a higher percentage of making it during the second half then the first half by 4.3%, even with the nerves of the game coming close to the end. This is due to the fact that players have already gotten warmed up from their free throws in the first half, according to ESPN. Student sections can create an atmosphere and affect players. “I like our student section because they can create an atmosphere that can motivate me,” Explains Issac Bjorge, a varsity player for Bigfork High school basketball. During intense games, the student section can become a little too excited and start jumping back and forth across the line, But for the most part, they try to keep it G rated. What is awesome about the Bigfork student section is that parents, cheerleaders and the student section will come together to perform the same chant during those intense games. There may be no way to measure if the student sections affect the game but they encourage our players and create a great atmosphere to be apart in.
Super Bowl LIV By:RYDER NOLLAN The score was 20 to 10 with the 49ers on top, but chiefs had the ball on the 35 yard line with 7 minutes and 17 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Spring Sports
As Spring sports started up on March 9th, Bigfork Student Athletes gear up for their seasons
As the snow melts away and the spring warmth comes around, BHS Students are gearing up for their competition spring sports tennis, track, and golf. Blane Barrows is a sophomore ready to compete in tennis and have some fun, “I get to spend time with some fun people and get to learn some new things and looking forward to the people and coaches,” stated Barrows. Blane made it to state last year and is hoping to have a better year and win State. On the track side, students have been training on the off season to prepare themselves for running. Aiden Butterfield is a senior on the Bigfork High school track team that is one of many athletes looking for improvements. “I am looking forward to breaking the five minute barrier and going to state. I came six seconds away last year from breaking the five minute barrier” explains Butterfield. It is not just the times and winning state that counts, it is the people you are with. “It's fun to be with people and stay fit,” emphasizes Grace Stewart. Grace is looking forward to this year and is hoping to crush her times and go to state. Golf is another sport that BHS offers. Senior Brandon Hopkins is a Golfer. Some athletes at Bigfork fell short from going to state and want some redemption this year. “I am hoping to be all state this year because it's the last chance I got and last year I was two spots away from being all state” explains Hopkins. Hopkins placed 17th out of the 82 people at state. Whatever Sport you are doing this year, good luck. If you are on the border between doing a sport or not, The Norse code encourages it, you might enjoy it.
The Elusive Creature in Flathead Lake
The Flathead lake monster is an elusive creature that has avoided revealing itself for a long time, but this past week, there were two sightings of the Supposed Flathead monster.
By: RYDER NOLLAN It is the middle of mack days, and people are out fishing for these fish that can help them win thousands of dollars. This year has been really interesting. Fishermen are saying that they have spotted something uneasy in the middle of the lake when they go out at 6 a.m in the morning. The fishers believe it could be the elusive creature that has been avoiding discovery, the Flathead Lake Monster. The fishermen were just going out for another casual day of fishing “We woke up early as usual around 5:30 to get out on the lake and catch some macks. When we got out there in the middle of the lake it was nice and quiet. Then we heard a giant splash behind us as something was breaking the water and we turned around just to see a sliver of a big fin, I think it was the Flathead Monster” explains the two fishermen. The other time it was seen from this past week was when a family decided to go on a nice boat ride. They were relaxing out in the sun when they spotted something long barely underneath the surface. One of them had their camera in hand and was able to get a picture of it before it vanished into the depths of the Flathead Lake. This creature has been making people wonder what was in the depths of the Flathead Lake since 1889. Well some people believed it to be a big sturgeon. They might not be wrong since there was a sturgeon caught in Flathead lake on May 28, 1955 that was seven and a half feet long and weighed 181 pounds. Some people believe that sturgeon is its baby and there is still a bigger sturgeon. Others believe that it is a prehistoric dinosaur that is similar to the lochness monster. Of course there are the people who think that it is just a big log people have been seeing. We may never know if it will be truly discovered or not only time will tell. Just kidding April Fools! Go check out the April Fools paper of 2020
Right there on a sunny day of April you can see the Flathead monster, taken by one of the people on a nice day on the boat.
