Cheerleaders discriminated for wearing uniforms to schoolBigfork High School dress code does not allow female student athletes to wear their uniforms to school but the students are allowed to wear them to school functions.
Female athletes are allowed to wear their uniforms to school functions because it is not during school hours, but are discriminated during school hours because it is, ‘not school appropriate.’ “Where do we draw the line?” asked David Creamer. “We can’t let the girls’ swim team wear their uniforms because they’re swimsuits. But we let them wear their warm ups, like any other team.” Cheerleaders here at Bigfork High School are not allowed to wear their full uniforms to school on game days, but they have to wear them to the games. What is the difference between wearing them during school hours, and then to games? Frankly, there really is not a difference. Not only do their fellow classmates see them at the games in their uniforms, but the entire community also sees them in uniform. “It’s because school is a learning environment and we are ‘too distracting’ with our uniforms.” said Senior Dylan Schmidt. “They are trying to cover us up to help boys focus more on education than on us, but they don’t care how that makes us feel.” “It has been a long policy before I even got here that they weren’t allowed to wear them.” Said Principal Alan Robbins. “But, it is something we can talk to the coaches about to see about changing that, because the undergarments they wear are more appropriate than normal skirts.” Other schools allow their cheerleaders to wear their uniforms to school, but only on game days. Bigfork is different and does not allow that. Schmidt said, “If volleyball players are allowed to wear their jerseys to school, then we should be allowed to wear our stuff as well.” The girls’ basketball and volleyball teams are allowed to wear their jerseys to school, and the cheerleaders are one of the only sports team who are treated different than any other. |
